Tunnel in San Pedro will be Completed by September 2008

The works to build a tunnel under the N-340 as it passes by San Pedro de Alcántara will be completed by September 2008.

Magdalena Alvarez, the Minister of Fomento , recently met in Marbella’s Town Hall with the Governing Committe, entrepreneurs and other local groups to show them the construction plans for works to be done to the N-340 as it passes by San Pedro de Alcántara, which include the “tunneling” of the high-way.  The works done affect 6km, between points 169,26km and 175,16km starting at the limit with Estepona and Puerto Banus.  It is expected that the tunnel (between El Ingenio and a little after the bus station) will near the kilometer in length.  It will tackle the roundabouts at El Ingenio and Marqués del Duero, while the junction with the Ronda road will be resolved with a Viaduct.  The Minister’s commitment has materialized with the publication in the BOE of the period of public announcements of the project and of the list of properties to expropriate.  It is estimated that construction works will commence before October 2006 and will conclude in September 2008.  During this period, traffic will be deflected using the southern by-pass road through Nueva Alcántara.  This project is most welcomed by neighbors who have been pleading for years for these works to be carried out and which will bring about the decongestion of traffic in this area.

Campo Europa - Third course opens at La Cal   Report:  David Wishart

The newly-opened third course makes La Cala the biggest golf and residential property scheme on the Costa del Sol, and to emphasise the scale of this project, the courses have been named Campo Europa, Campo America and Campo Asia. A hotel is already on site, a spa  will open later this year, and there is a FIFA-standard football pitch that has attracted the likes of Dynamo Moscow. The new course, Campo Europa, was designed by the talented Cabell B. Robinson, who formerly worked with Robert Trent Jones and has since made his mark as a man who designs courses that are quite simply very playable and enjoyable. He did the other two courses at La Cala, and more recent designs include La Reserva and Santana, both of them superb.  At Campo Europa there is not a bad hole, and every par four allows golfers to see the green for their  second shot. One oddity is that there are five par-3s, two of them back to back. La Cala will never be confused with a links course, but the consolation is exciting plateau tees and wonderful views. The Ojén river comes into play on eight holes and cuts across three fairways, and five elegant bridges have also been built. Three hundred trees and 1,500 bushes have been planted, lavender and rosemary is in the air, and most importantly the Bermuda Tifway 419 grass has taken well to the fairways. Greens are big, in great order, not too quick as you’d expect on a new course, and very true, so golfers can really go for those long putts!

Campo Europa starts nicely with a short downhill that for many players will be a fairway wood and a 9-iron, although that second shot could lead to a birdie or a lost ball. Other holes call for careful club selection, particularly on downhill shots where taking too much club is severely punished. Every buggy comes with a GPS to help golfers with distances. Fairways are generally not too tight, but beware places where they are pinched, and on the last hole - what a cracker - Mr. Robinson has devilishly placed a small pot bunker to catch the big hitters.

The history of Antequera's famous olive oil

The well known Hojiblanca Group has set up an olive oil museum including a restored Roman mill

The Olive Oil Museum in Antequera opened two years ago as a research and permanent exhibition centre of the history and customs of olive oil extraction and production. Among the exhibits are a Roman oil mill dating from the first century, and various other mills dating from the 7th and 9th centuries, salvaged from old farmhouses and brought to the museum in working order.

The building has been divided into three exhibition areas. The first houses the 17th century olive oil mill, and beside this is a room with grinding stones and a bodega. The second area is where one finds the ancient Roman mill, and the third is a gallery that is to be used as an exhibition room, which also houses the 19th century mill.

The museum was set up by the Hojiblanca group and the Spanish Association of Olive Oil Municipalities, and apart from the reconstruction of the mills, they have also gathered together a large collection of farm tools and equipment once used in the region. Many of the objects and documents on show were donated by members of the public. To complete the museum, the Hojiblanca Group have built a fully automated sampling room with 12 information points in their premises next to the museum.
